What are you most proud of?

  • As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month at BBCHS, we are focusing on asking students their lived experiences and perspectives about this month and what it means to them. Today we asked a few students in our Bilingual Program the question, “What is one part of Hispanic Heritage that you are most proud of?”.  The graphic below portrays just a few of their answers. Students, thank you for sharing your pride with us!

Photo CC: What is one part of Hispanic heritage that you are most proud of? "I'm proud of how we celebrate Día de los Muertos. It brings us a lot of us together to celebrate the ones who are no longer with us in a positive way. We gather, grieve, and eat lots of food. We embrace all the beautiful colors and dances. It shows a part of who we are." Tiffani Rodriguez - BBCHS Student

Día de la Raza

  • To continue our celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, today we want to say Happy Día de la Raza “Day of the Race”, to all our Hispanic/Latinx friends.
As USA commemorates Indigenous Peoples' Day on October 11, the Latin American countries such as Mexico, Brazil, and Ecuador celebrate the Día de la Raza ("Day of the Race") on 12th October to recognize their indigenous people, traditions, and cultural heritage. šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ šŸ‡§šŸ‡· šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡Ø
Argentina calls today, "Day of Respect of Cultural Diversity" šŸ‡¦šŸ‡· and Peru calls it "Day of the Aboriginal Peoples & Intercultural Dialogue" šŸ‡µšŸ‡Ŗ.
As for Spain, October 12 is also the National Day of Spain, which is to commemorates the Spanish legacy to the world. šŸ‡ŖšŸ‡ø
Let us celebrate this beautiful day together as one. Happy Día de la Raza! šŸŒŽ

Student Spotlight: Yarizza Pina

  • Today we are excited to feature BBCHS student Yarizza Pina! Yarizza is a senior student who is described as compassionate and hard-working by all of her teachers. She serves as the President of the Ecology Club, is a proud NHS member, and a Cosmetology student at Kankakee Area Career Center.

As part of our Hispanic heritage month celebration, we interviewed Yarizza and are very thankful we got the chance to hear her unique and thoughtful perspectives. She was quick to share praise for her family stating, “It is encouraging to see how my parents have worked so hard to build a better future for us.” Yarizza also shared that her family often partakes in traditional food while discussing different cultural holidays and the importance of celebrating them.

Yarizza is busy keeping up with her senior year while also trying to finish her hours at KACC. Thank you for taking the time to speak with us Yarizza! We wish you the very best of luck on all your current and future endeavors.
